Project Two: Reading Response
Page 85 of Lupton's The New Basics, discusses the important role that positive and negative space (figure/ground) within the creation of a form. Even subtle changes can drastically affect the outcome of the composition. As the class created line studies, we were learning how to effectively evaluate and create figure/ground tension. This was put into practice not only in the raw creation of the lines studies, but in the manipulation as well. The next assigned reading section expanded on the various methods and uses of framing. It states, " framing creates the conditions for understanding the image or object...there can be frames within frames that create new compositions."As our line studies were manipulated and paired with photographs, framing because especially important as many of the compositions were then cropped to achieve the proper framing for a certain pair.
